History

Portland is rich in history. Located downtown, the Maine Historical Society is comprised of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House (childhood home of one of America’s most famous poets), the Longfellow Garden, the Brown Library (which holds one of the 25 known copies of the Declaration of Independence), and the Maine Historical Society Museum (features exhibitions and programs all about Maine’s history). The Victoria Mansion takes you back to the 1800s as it holds over 90% of its original interiors. Depending on the season, climb up the Portland Observatory (America’s last standing maritime signal tower) and see a unique perspective of Portland and Casco Bay.
