While Maine boasts a mostly rocky coastline, beachcombers can find happiness just a short drive away. Willard Beach is the closest sandy beach to Portland and offers views of House Island and Cushing Island and the Ram Island Light. Crescent Beach State Park has picnic areas, rocky ledges, and a mile long crescent shaped sandy beach. If you are looking for more waves, head to Scarborough Beach State Park or, if you have little ones, head to Ferry Beach right next door. Old Orchard Beach is very well known in Maine as a top summertime destination which holds a seven mile stretch of beach, 500 foot pier full of entertainment, and a strip of restaurants, beach shops, arcades, and amusement rides. For those who don’t mind a long drive, Popham Beach State Park is worth the trek.
